Did you know the Florida Panhandle is home to some of the largest and most vital seagrass meadows in the world?
Beneath the clear, shallow waters of the beautiful Florida Panhandle lies one of Earth’s most vital and often overlooked ecosystems: seagrass beds.
These underwater meadows play a critical role in maintaining ocean health and, surprisingly, Florida has more seagrass than any other state, with nearly 2.2 million acres of it! On a global scale, only around 10% of the ocean floor is covered in seagrass, making the abundance we have here in Florida both incredibly unique and important.
We’ve briefly mentioned seagrass before, where we talked about the importance of protecting Destin’s waterways. In this post, we’ll take a closer look at what seagrass is and explore the incredible role it plays beneath the surface. We’ll also remind our visitors how they can help protect these underwater powerhouses while enjoying some of the best water activities in Destin.
What Is Seagrass, and Why Is It Important?
Seagrass might not grab your attention at first—let’s face it, it isn’t as flashy or as famous as a coral reef—but this vital part of our oceans quietly works to keep them safe, clean, and thriving. They give homes and a food supply to your favorite fish, create secluded, safe nurseries for their young, and support everything from rays and crabs to sea turtles and seahorses.
These underwater meadows also help keep our oceans clean and our coastlines protected. They act as the ocean’s natural filter, cleaning the water, stabilizing heavy metals, and absorbing pollutants, bacteria, and excess nutrients. Their leaves slow down water currents, trapping and dropping sediment to build up the sea floor, forming offshore banks that protect coastal settlements from high waves and storm surges.
The extensive root systems of seagrass help stabilize the seafloor, strengthening shorelines and reducing erosion. These same root systems also play a role in combating climate change by capturing and storing carbon dioxide deep within the ocean floor, where it can remain locked away for thousands of years. Impressively, per square meter, seagrass meadows store more carbon than rainforests! Globally, seagrass meadows are estimated to store nearly 20 billion tons of organic carbon, making them one of our most powerful, underappreciated, and unlikely tools in our fight against climate change.
Did you know? Seagrass isn’t a weed, but a flowering plant that evolved from land-based ancestors and returned to sea over 75 million years ago!
Seagrass does so much for our planet, but it’s also surprisingly fragile. Today, these meadows are under more pressure than ever.
How Can Our Visitors Help Protect Seagrass?
Even small actions done frequently can make a significant difference for this delicate ecosystem and help it thrive. Let’s discuss ways to protect seagrass during your next visit to Destin and Crab Island Watersports.
Learn to Spot Seagrass: Seagrass appears as dark patches in clear water, so steer clear of these areas if you spot them.
Avoid Shallow Areas: Stick to marked channels when navigating to prevent propeller scarring. If you pass over a seagrass bed, please trim up your motor when moving through this area. Stick to sandy, light-colored channels, or use a pole or trolling motor if passing over shallow areas like this.
Fish Responsibly: Anchor in the sand, never in seagrass beds: this is the best practice for avoiding uprooting vegetation. Use seagrass-safe anchoring systems like reef anchors or shallow-water poles. Never discard fishing lines or gear into the water, because entanglement can damage both seagrass and marine life.
Limit Physical Damage: Don’t trample seagrass while wading or snorkeling near these shallow, sensitive areas.
Educate and Make a Positive Change: Learn, and help others learn, about the importance of seagrass in protecting shorelines, supporting marine life, and preventing climate change. If you’re reading this, you’re already doing this!
Participate in programs that monitor water quality and seagrass health, and donate to or volunteer with seagrass planting efforts and other habitat restoration projects. Many of these initiatives have achieved incredible success globally!
